Originally hailing from Redmond, WA, Joshua Parrill is a graduate of Central Washington University where he earned a Bachelor of Music Education in 2014. He currently teaches Band and Orchestra at Harrison Middle School in Sunnyside, WA where he works to instill a solid foundation of musical knowledge while also helping students access their musical potential. Joshua’s main focus is for his students to create meaning and connection to the music they play as well as understand that their potential for success is unlimited with the right amount of hard work they put in.
In 2011 Joshua became a founding member and musical director of the Ellensburg Big Band, a position which he held for 10+ years. Through that time the group saw immense musical success and growth as they were invited to play for numerous events both locally and internationally, traveling and performing as far as Sanda City, Japan (2014) and Christchurch, New Zealand (2019). Joshua continues to be an active musician in the Yakima Valley and Tri-Cities area, performing with groups such as the Stephanie Steele Quintet, The Isolation Big Band, the Three Rivers Saxtette, the Yakima Valley Big Band, and the Eastern Washington Wind Symphony.
In August 2019 Joshua took over as Director of the Yakima Valley Community Band, having previously served in Assistant Director and Co-Director positions. Joshua’s expectation of high caliber musicianship from the ensemble is realized through the musician’s commitment to putting on challenging yet entertaining programs that delight audiences of all ages. Under Joshua’s baton the YVCB has taken on concert band masterworks from composers such as Gustav Holst, Percy Grainger, David Maslanka, Malcolm Arnold, Aaron Copland, and many more.
